The Gillette company was found in 1901 by King C Gillette who wanted to improve on the straight razor shave. The technical difficulties producing a disposable razor blade fine enough to attach to a handle were solved and by 1904 a patent was granted for the commercial production and distribution of the first Safety razor. (Although the Kampfe brothers produced a single edge safety razor called the Kampfe Rake before Gillette.) The American government supplied all the soldiers in WW1 with a Gillette razor providing a huge boost to their sales. Since then the razor has reinvented itself many times creating a catalogue of collectable razors such as the Aristocrat, the Fatboy, Flare tip, Slim and Techmatic to name a few. They still produce the D/E razor blade alongside the contemporary M3 & F5 cartridge refills.
